New Ceirra Evans Show | Moremen Gallery April 5 - May 11

Be Careful Out There, a solo exhibition of new paintings by KyCAD friend Ceirra Evans, is on view at Louisville's Moremen Gallery April 5 - May 11, 2024.

Evans' current body of work uses the history of oil painting, folk art, and illustration to create a stage where Kentucky's landscape is the main character. Images of young queerness and deer tracking work together to question how this landscape, its people and its power create a hunting ground. Comparing the ways of the forest to the ways of the world, a young queer woman is seen searching for love and community.

The use of both real and imagined folks expresses the complex dynamics of rurality in queerness, addiction and familial relationships.

With a heavy dose of cynicism that was covered in a thick fog of cigarette smoke, Evans' earlier work illustrated stories from her childhood and homecoming. With heavier doses of reverence and humor, she considers her latest batch of work as an ode to the revered tradition of Appalachian storytelling.

Concerning what and why she paints: “It is important, as a Kentuckian, to paint Southern stories, as history continues to be erased, buried, and even rewritten. I create accessible imagery, aiming to love and invite in those who have felt unloved by this place called home.” Evans said in a press release.
